Review

August 14, 2006 marked the 11th anniversary of Journey Home's annual golf tournament held at Lakeshore Country Club. Each year, 144 players of all ages and skill levels, competed in a scramble format for hundreds of prizes donated by local businesses, individuals and friends of Journey Home. There were also the traditional prizes for longest drive, and closest to the pin. Lunch was provided prior to tee off by one of our long time supporters, Gaetano's Bakery and shortly afterwards the parade of carts took off for our shotgun start. When the last golfer returned from the hunt for birdies and eagles, all enjoyed a wonderful dinner and conversation which frequently included wildly exaggerated descriptions of some of the day's shots!!

The tournament is annually organized primarily by volunteer Dave Wakefield and his daughter-in-law Mimi who handles the 50/50 contest and many other details. 2006 marked the first time that “Best Buy” helped out with the tournament by sending a number of volunteers from their management and supervisory departments to help out during the day. Thanks to them and to their supervisor Suzie Devine for all of their assistance. In addition to their hours of service, they even made a donation of 1,000 dollars!! To date, the tournament has raised more than $120,000 dollars for Journey Home!!

A highlight of this year's program was the presentation of the Jeanie Premo award to Doctor Ted Eckermann, a local dentist and a long time sponsor of the tournament and our home. Jeanie Premo was the mother of our director Tracey Jagla and her final wish was to have a home for the dying on the west side of the city. Journey Home is the result!! Doctor Ted closes his office and brings many of his staff to our day’s festivities. Our heartfelt thanks go out to him for all his support. Dave Wakefield also received a special Jeanie Premo award in recognition of his tireless work on the tournament over the past 11 years. Congrats and thanks to Dave also.
